Delivered from Darkness
It is night time. Darkness surrounds you. You have no light to shine and guide you. Instead, you are lost in confusion, peril, and impending death. If you are reading these words and have never trusted Christ, this scene describes you. The Lord Jesus loves you deeply and stands as your only light to lead you out of such deep darkness. Please take just a moment to read further.
Will you acknowledge your location? You are described as “dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1), “an enemy of God” (James 4:4), “not righteous” (Romans 3:10), “ungodly” (Romans 5:6), and “guilty before God” (Romans 3:19). Simply put, you are lost in the confusion of sin. It may be the sins of hatred and murder that mar your record. Or you could be wandering in lust and adultery. Perhaps you are a thief, robbing man and God of what does not belong to you. No matter what your sin is, without Christ “you know not the light” (Job 24:16).
Your thoughts, words, and actions are not secret and hidden from view. Almighty God knows each and every one. “Thou knowest my thought afar off” (Psalm 139:2). “The darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day” (Psalm 139:12). “Whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light” (Luke 12:3). When the Lord comes he will “bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts” (I Corinthians 4:5).
Are you lost yet? Compared to the local convict you may appear safe and sound, but compared to Jesus Christ you are hopelessly lost! You sin because you are a child of the night. “If a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him” (John 11:10). You continually wander in rebellion and cannot seem to find your way because “he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth” (John 12:35).
You may protest, saying, “I am not now nor ever have been lost in darkness.” “Others are much more sinful than I.” I know my way, and will be just fine.” “I am one of devout religious beliefs, not a ‘wanderer of the night.’” “All roads lead to heaven. They all show light to guide us.” “My church has never said that I was lost in sin.” Friend, these statements do not verify your security; they simply highlight your confusion. “Let God be true and every man a liar” (Romans 3:4). It is God who “divided the light from the darkness” (Genesis 1:4). He does not seek to blend and confuse the two.
Do you see it? Will you admit this is the truth? Or will you continue to excuse and ignore your own sin? Please don’t believe the lie of the Evil One, Satan, who “himself is transformed into an angel of light” (II Corinthians 11:14). Should you continue to blindly embrace his deception, you will know darkness now and for all eternity. “But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness” (Matthew 8:12).
Is there someone who can light the way to heaven? YES! There is clarity in the midst of such mayhem! The God of the Bible is the Way. He is the Source and Substance of the truth needed to take you to Heaven. “God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all” (I John 1:5). He is the One who came to this earth in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ, to bring light to all mankind. “In him was life and the life was the light of men” (John 1:4).
Jesus did not come as a prophet, a way, or a guide. He came exclusively described as “that true light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world” (John 1:9). He said, “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12). He is the visible display of God’s mighty love to even you. Two thousand years ago Christ, the Son of God, came to this sin-cursed earth for one reason: “To seek and save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10). He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, and then went to the cross to die at the hands of wicked men. While on the cross, He shed his spotless blood and died in your place. Just before his death, He cried, “It is finished” (John 19:30). The payment for your salvation was complete! His body was buried, certifying His death, then, three days later, He literally rose from the dead! Jesus Christ came to turn you and everyone else in the world “from darkness to light and from the power of Satan unto God” (Acts 26:18).
Do you understand? Christ is the Light that you need for today and for ever. It is not in a religion, a ritual, or a spiritual leader that you will find guidance. It is in the Person and work of Jesus Christ alone. That He died, was buried, and rose again is proof that He is the only Way out of sin’s midnight. “God hath shined in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (II Corinthians 4:6). Without Him, you will continue to wander in the shadows of sin. Whether you are presently immersed in tragic sin, devoutly religious, or just an ordinary individual, you desperately need Jesus Christ!
Now the choice is yours! Do you understand where God says you are, lost in the night of your own disobedience? Do you realize that the teachings and religions of men are only adding to your confusion and will eventually condemn you to hell? Do you see that Jesus Christ alone died, was buried, and rose again to rescue you from your plight? Then the choice is up to you!
You must simply, by faith, come to Christ, “the Light of the world” (John 9:5). If your system of religion has only engendered more questions and confusion, it is because Christ is not its centerpiece. He is the clear, convincing Light that manifests and meets your need. Just now, depend upon Him for your soul’s salvation. “Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light” (Ephesians 5:14). Jesus said, “He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12).
Almighty God is described as “the Father Lights” (James 1:7). His glory is so unattainable that Jesus said, “No man cometh unto the Father but by me” (John 14:6). Perhaps you are thinking, “This all sounds good for someone else, but not me, not now.” Don’t be deceived; the Devil seeks to blind your mind from the truth, “lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them” (II Corinthians 4:4). Satan longs to drag you into the darkness of eternal hell. Please turn away from the blindness of Satan to Christ. He alone can take “you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (II Peter 2:9).
“How can I be rescued from the darkness of sin?” Simply turn right now from the night of sin, in whatever form it blinds you, and believe only upon Christ. “If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9). Don’t allow the Evil One to distract, hinder, or deceive you a moment longer. He has only darkness to offer now and for eternity. Believe on Christ! He is the Light! “While ye have the light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of the light:” (John 12:36). Christ declared, “I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness” (John 12:46). Friend, simply humble your heart before Jesus Christ, repent and believe on Him alone. You could pray something like this:
“Lord Jesus, I now confess that I am lost in the darkness of my sin. I am as guilty as You say I am. The harder I try on my own, the deeper I wander in confusion and iniquity. I know that I deserve your judgment in the darkness of hell. So, right now, I am turning to you, ‘The Light of the World,’ as my only hope. I believe that you alone died and rose again for me. I trust your shed blood, your sacrificial death and your powerful resurrection to save me. Make me a child of the light right here and now, in Jesus name, Amen.”
